Picture this: a 16mm compact strand cable arrives, the vessel is halfway across the water, and the crew needs to fit a mechanical stud. You have a crown ring that looks close enough for the cone on the shelf. Can you make it work?
Hayn’s cone configuration chart lists specific cone and crown ring combinations for each wire diameter and construction. For 16mm wire, it shows two Compact Strand and Dyform configurations. Use the parts specified for your cable, and confirm the construction before ordering.
“16mm” describes the wire diameter, but the construction also matters. Hayn’s chart lists these configurations:
16mm Dyform, D–1×25
16mm Compact Strand, CS–1×36
The chart also lists standard 16mm 1×19 wire separately, with cone CTC58 and crown ring CTCR58. It does not list a 16mm CS–1×19 configuration. If your cable is labeled 16mm 1×19 Compact Strand, check with Hayn or your cable supplier before ordering.
The cone geometry and crown ring are specified for the wire’s diameter and construction. Hayn’s chart provides the matched part numbers for each listed configuration. A different combination is not the specified setup and should not be used unless Hayn confirms it is suitable.
In a rigging application, matching the fitting to the cable is essential. A close visual match does not confirm that the parts are right for the wire.
Two 16mm cables can look similar from the outside, so don’t rely on appearance or a general “1×19” label. Before ordering fittings:
