The Connection Method Shapes the Installation

Specifying a cable rail system is only part of the job. The project team must also decide how the cable will be connected to the terminals. That decision can affect appearance, required tooling, lead time, field flexibility, and installation labor.

Hayn offers several attachment approaches, including machine-swaged assemblies, Hayn Grip terminals, and Handy Crimp terminals. Each is intended for a different installation workflow.

 

 

Machine Swage: Controlled Fabrication and a Streamlined Finish

Machine-swaged terminals are compressed onto the cable with a hydraulic swaging machine. The process creates a compact, integrated connection between the wire rope and terminal.

These assemblies are commonly fabricated by Hayn or another properly equipped fabricator before delivery to the job site. They are well suited to projects where field dimensions are confirmed in advance and the installer wants preassembled cable runs with a polished, consistent appearance.

The main tradeoff is reduced field flexibility. If dimensions change after fabrication, the assembly may need to be modified or replaced rather than simply cut and terminated on site.

 

Hayn Grip: Field Installation Without Factory Swaging

Hayn Grip is a compression-style terminal designed for installation in the field without a hydraulic swaging machine. It can be useful when cable lengths will be measured and cut during installation or when the contractor needs to adapt to verified job-site conditions.

This approach can reduce dependence on premeasured factory assemblies, but it still requires accurate cutting, careful assembly, installer familiarity, and compliance with Hayn’s installation instructions.

 

Handy Crimp: Field Flexibility With Dedicated Tooling

Handy Crimp terminals are also installed in the field, but they require the correct crimping tool and procedure. They can be a strong choice for contractors and fabricators who perform cable railing work regularly and are prepared to invest in the required tooling and training.

The system offers more field control than a fully preassembled cable run while maintaining a repeatable mechanical connection when installed correctly.

 

 

Matching the Method to the Project

A practical starting point is:

  • Field-measured runs and job-site adaptability: Hayn Grip
  • Repeat field installation with the correct crimping tool: Handy Crimp

Each method can provide a strong, corrosion-resistant connection when the terminal is correctly matched to the cable and installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The methods should not be assumed to have identical capacities in every size and configuration. Required strength, cable construction, terminal type, tooling, inspection, and environmental exposure all matter.

Choosing the connection method early helps the project team coordinate measurements, fabrication, installer responsibilities, and lead times before those details become schedule problems.
